Hot Galleries in Hot Springs

Hot Springs, Arkansas, one of the top cities for art in America is not short on galleries.  Most of the galleries are lined up along Central Avenue, right across from Bath House Row and the Visitor’s Center, making for easy window shopping.  While the more remarkable works of art range into the thousands, a budget of $500 can snag a pretty remarkable piece.  Shopping in Hot Springs is not complete without wandering through the art galleries. Weekly Travel Quote

“I pull over once in a while and let them scream past.  They don’t know what they’re missing.  Or, if they do, they’ve become numb to it.  A sad thing.  -Jeff Posey

Towering over Hot Springs

Hot Springs Mountain Tower

Here in Hot Springs National Park, one of America’s oldest national parks, a 216-foot tower sprouts atop a small mountain.  The Hot Springs Mountain Tower, opened in 1983, seems cut from the same mold as Knoxville’s Sunsphere, fifty feet higher, built for a world’s fair a year earlier. From this vantage point, it is easy to pick out the landmarks in the city of Hot Springs.  Continue reading

Arkansas’ Unexpected Tropical Lounge

Cheesy tropical landscapes should not be limited to Key West and tiki bars, as I learned on a trip to the Arlington Hotel in Hot Springs, Arkansas.  This grand hotel once housed Al Capone and his entourage.  Less than a century ago, gamblers would frolic in the hotel with their winnings from illicit parlors nearby.  Today monkeys and water birds frolic in murals in the lobby lounge. Happy New Year Quote

Koh Samui

The world will end some day, on somebody’s calendar, one way or another.  But until then, let’s go drink a mai tai on the beach with someone we love and get our belly buttons pierced.  Hell, it’s about time.  –David Ewing Duncan (in Conde Nast Traveler)

Back in Time Book Review

When trying to record a moment, it is often difficult to determine what makes it significant, which detail to note, which conversation to record.  We see through lenses of prejudice, and it is often not until years later we realize the significance of the words written before.  Travel writers face the same challenges, as they interpret for us what they see, hear, and experience, and a strong travel book can be read decades later for a taste of life as it was.  Herbert Kubly, a University of Illinois professor, traveled to Italy after World War II.  His out-of-print 1955 book, American in Italy, reminds us that picking up an old travel book should not be limited to Graham Greene, Mark Twain, and Patrick Leigh Fermor.
